Aquatint uit <strong>1842<\/strong> van de hand <strong>Edward Duncan<\/strong> naar het ontwerp van marine schilder <strong>William John Huggins<\/strong> met de &#8220;<em>Giraffe&#8221;<\/em> en de &#8220;<em>Ocean<\/em>&#8220;, stoomschepen die &#8220;<em>with Her Majesty&#8217;s Mail<\/em>&#8221; aankomen in en vertrekken uit Rotterdam. Op de voorgrond worden Hollanders naar de kade overgebracht. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm: ca. 35,5 x 60 cm.<\/p>\n<p>Beide raderstoomboten werden te water gelaten in 1836 en ingezet als stoomschepen voor het vervoer van post door de Britse <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Steam_Navigation_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Steam Navigation Company<\/a> (GSNC) . De Giraffe deed later dienst tijdens de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog<\/p>\n<p>De GSNC werd opgericht in 1824 en was anderhalve eeuw Londen&#8217;s voornaamste bedrijf voor <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Short_sea_shipping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short-sea shipping<\/a>.
