375

Two Tulips and Jasmine – pencil drawing by A.J.L. Bruins after a print by Anton Weiss, who in turn reproduced a design by Jan van Huysum. Signed and dated in the lower right: “A:J:L: Bruins 1830.” Size: approx. 45 x 30 cm.

Anton Weiss (1801–1851) was a Bohemian-born flower painter who studied at the Art Academy in Amsterdam. Between 1820 and 1833, he created designs for a series of over 70 lithographs, drawing inspiration from 18th-century Dutch flower painters such as Jan van Huysum. A.J.L. Bruins was presumably an amateur artist who practiced his (or her) drawing skills using works of great masters that were available as prints in those days.
