ONE OF THE MOST EMBLEMATIC IMAGES OF PIAZZA DEL DUOMO IN MILAN
“La Piazza del Duomo a Milano col Coperto dei Figini“. Etching with aquatint after a design by Giovanni Migliara made around 1828. With beautiful original hand colouring. Size: 37 x 47 cm.
Giovanni Migliara (1785 – 1837) is known to the world of great Italian and international collectors as a vedutista with an admirable optical and colouristic sensibility, who owes his prestige above all to the landscapes and urban views of the Italian cities he visited, as well as to the nobility from all over Europe that bought his works during their Grand Tours of the peninsula.
“La Piazza del Duomo a Milano col Coperto dei Figini”, created with the use of the camera obscura, is an emblematic example of the expressiveness of his works where he combines refined perspective and architectural research with simple narratives of everyday life.
The Coperto dei Figini on the left was a long arcade built by the Figini family in the late 16th century. It stood along one side of Piazza del Duomo and housed shops and businesses. On the opposite side of the square there’s the Isolato del Rebecchino, a small block of buildings consisting of modest structures with shops and residences. Both of these structures were demolished in the second half of the 19th century as part of the urban renewal projects to create the more open and monumental appearance of Piazza del Duomo that we see today.
