Panorama taken from the Peter and Paul fortress with Naryshkin bastion, overlooking the Neva River. On the Palance Embankment we see the Winter Palace, the Hermitage Theatre, the Marble Palace, the Vladimir Palace, the New Michael Palace, the Ficquelmont Palace and the Summer Garden.
On the right the Old Stock Exchange is sited to fill the majestic sweep of the Spit [Strelka] of Vasilievsky Island, just opposite the Winter Palace.
Until 1850 only a pontoon bridge (left) was allowed across the river and replaced with a permanent bridge (Blagoveshchensky Bridge).
