“Nieuwe Kaart van het Nederkwartier, en van het Kwartier van Montfoort, des Stichts van Utrecht”. [New Map of the Nederkwartier and the Quarter of Montfoort, of the Diocese of Utrecht.] Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Isaak Tirion, in 1753. Coloured by a later hand. Size approx. 32 x 38 cm.
This map depicts the western part of the province of Utrecht, showing the “quarters” (districts) of the Nederkwartier of Utrecht and the Land of Montfoort, as well as the “Liberty of the City of Utrecht,” the territory under the city’s direct jurisdiction.
The renowned Amsterdam publisher Isaak Tirion produced numerous regional maps of the Dutch provinces in the eighteenth century for his Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas [New and Concise Hand Atlas] and Hedendaagsche Historie [Contemporary History].
The map presents a clear overview of the administrative divisions of the region around Utrecht, with major towns and cities such as Utrecht, IJsselstein, Montfoort, Vianen, and Woerden. The historic boundaries of the water boards, polders, and local jurisdictions are distinctly visible. Rivers such as the Lek, Oude Rijn, Vaartse Rijn, and Hollandse IJssel form natural borders between the quarters and the neighbouring provinces.
The map exemplifies Tirion’s characteristic eighteenth-century cartographic style: clear and balanced, with hand-coloured administrative boundaries, finely engraved lettering, and the publisher’s imprint in the upper right corner.
