Tulip – anonymous, c. 1740

Tulipa Variegata [multicoloured tulip] – drawing with gouache and watercolour, presumably created by a Dutch master around 1740. Size (paper): 33.5 x 24 cm.

This beautiful depiction of a flamed (‘broken’) tulip is meticulously detailed, with subtle water droplets on the petals and leaves. The elegant, slender stem carries narrow leaves that curl upward in a flowing line. This work reflects the botanical interest of the 18th century, in which lifelike representation and refined colour gradations were central.
