Four Tulips – watercolour created around 1820. Size (paper): 35.4 x 25.6 cm.

Here, too, we see “broken” tulips with their interesting colour patterns, which became famous during the Tulip Mania of the 17th century.

Artists lead us to believe that in the past (almost) all tulips were broken. They were depicted most frequently because these rare and expensive varieties were considered particularly attractive and valuable.

The tulips appear to dance or bend under their own weight. The detailed brushstrokes and subtle colour transitions suggest a combination of botanical precision and artistic expression, typical of botanical illustrations from this period.
