„Der Hochzeitsstrauß“ caricature drawing in chalk and gouache by Josef Loukota (1879-1967), design for the Meggendorfer Blätter of September 16, 1915. Signed bottom center. Size: 24,2 x 19,8 cm.
A “Hochzeitsstrauß” is bridal bouquet in German, but a “Strauß” is also an ostrich.
The “Meggendorfer Blätter – Zeitschrift für Humor und Kunst”, published in Munich between 1888 and 1944, was a magazine founded by artist Lothar Meggendorf and filled with satire of a highly artistic quality. The magazine was full of illustrated jokes, short stories, poems, caricatures and cartoons created by a large number of well-known and lesser-known artists. The humor of the Meggendorfer Blätter, in contrast to a magazine like Simplicissimus, which appeared in the same period, was politically less sharp and is therefore still understandable and often witty even today.
