“Spiegelbild” (Reflection), drawing with pencil and ink made by Eugen von Baumgarten (1865-1919). Design for an illustration in “Meggendorfer Blätter“ from 1898. Signed and captioned in the lower right corner: “Herr Isidor ist so sehr Dichter, daß er selbst auf dem Eise den Menschen sein lyrisches Talent nicht vorenthalten kann.” (Mr. Isidor is such a poet that he cannot withhold his lyrical talent from people even on the ice.) The “Meggendorfer Blätter – Zeitschrift für Humor und Kunst”, published in Munich between 1888 and 1944, was a magazine founded by artist Lothar Meggendorf and filled with satire of a highly artistic quality. The magazine was full of illustrated jokes, short stories, poems, caricatures and cartoons created by a large number of well-known and lesser-known artists. The humor of the Meggendorfer Blätter, in contrast to a magazine like Simplicissimus, which appeared in the same period, was politically less sharp and is therefore still understandable and often witty even today.
