Aviation, and especially airships or balloons, began to emerge as a military technology in the 19th century. This print shows how a tethered airship could be used for battlefield reconnaissance and communication. The gas-filled balloon was attached to a cable that was controlled in altitude by steam engines and could be maneuvered somewhat horizontally with horse power.
