Women’s fashion in the 1830s was extravagant and dramatic, closely linked with the Romanticism that influenced all aspects of society during the first half of the nineteenth century. Romanticism emphasized emotion, the beauty of nature, and individualism. The mentality of a true romantic could be summarized with the still fashionable concept of ‘self-discovery.’ There was also a great appreciation for the domestic sphere and the importance of a moral center at home. One element of Romanticism that was clearly reflected in fashion was the tendency to look back to history for inspiration. Historicism permeated the style of the 1830s, especially interpretations of the seventeenth century in the wide collars, puffed sleeves, and curled hairstyles.
