“Le Rokin a Amsterdam“, lithograph made around 1859 by Carl Johan Billmark. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 18,5 x 28,3 cm.
Billmark 1804-1870, was a Swedish lithographer and draftsman, mainly active in Paris.
In a still not filled-in Rokin (with in the middle the Nieuwezijds Chapel, demolished in 1908) ships are stuck in the ice. Amsterdammers “fly on their swift skates, spin in circles and practice in a thousand different ways, while they speed past their fastest horses”, according to a foreign traveler.
