Constructivist design for a children’s book. Pouchoir over pen and pencil made by Vladimir Vasilevich Lebedev (Влади́мир Васи́льевич Ле́бедев) (1891-1967). Size: approx. 15,5 x 24 cm (frame: 45 x 52 cm).
Between 1924 and 1933 Vladimir Lebedev was Art Director for Detgiz (ДЕТГИЗ) the Leningrad publisher of children’s books. He was partly responsible for the creation of a new style of children’s books. He saw the books as integral organisms in which all elements structurally come together.
Soviet children’s books of the 1920s and 1930s by Detgiz, were not created by publishers, but by artists with diverse talents. Lebedev paid particular attention to a strong graphic expression as a basis and tried to translate his own childhood curiosity into constructivist principles.
