MAGNIFICENT PANORAMIC VIEW OF ISTANBUL WITH BRILLIANT ORIGINAL COLOURING

Ansicht von Constantinopel bei Eyoub – Vue général du Port de Constantinople prise des hauteurs d’Eyoub“. Lithography published by Johann Christian Hochwind in Munich, approx. 1835. With beautiful original hand colouring. Size (view): 33,8 x 69,5 cm.

Panoramic view of Istanbul and the Golden Horn with on the left the Galata neighbourhood with its Galata (or Pera) Tower, the northernmost observation point of the old city walls. On the opposite shore of the Golden Horn we look onto the Eyüp neighborhood, with from left to right: the Topkapi palace, the Aya Sofia mosque, the Blue Mosque, the Osman Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Bayezid II Mosque, Prophet Mohammed’s Mosque, Sultan Selim Mosque, Tekfur Palace, Eyüp Sultan Mosque.

Where the artist stood to draw this townscape, almost 200 years ago, it must have been an amazing viewpoint. A group of spectators with a telescope are depicted to the right proving that he was not the only one gazing towards this great Ottoman city.
