Doetinchem – ca. 1930
€175
“Wandelkaart van de Gem. Doetinchem”, colour lithograph published by tourist information office De Graafschap, around 1930. Size. 30 × 45 cm.
The map shows Doetinchem with its urban centre, surrounded by a varied landscape of river branches, woodlands, and villages. Clearly identifiable features include the Oude IJssel, the Kruisberge Bossen , Slangenburg Castle, and the “nature and recreation area Groenendaal”. Several walking routes are indicated and marked with letters.
On the reverse, the walking routes and excursions are described in detail, ranging from short circuits to longer walks through the surrounding countryside. These routes combine nature, culture, and leisure, leading past castles, wooded areas, and small churches. References to bus services of the Gelderland tramway company illustrate how walking was integrated with modern public transport.
The map reflects a pre-war view of leisure and nature appreciation and documents a largely vanished, small-scale landscape from before land consolidation and urban expansion.
