A VILLAGE ALONG THE OUDE RIJN RIVER
Drawing in pen and gray wash by Theodorus (known as ‘Dirk‘) Verrijk (1734-1786). Size: 25 x 37.7 cm.
Verrijk often made detailed sketches on-site and elaborated those in his studio. Along the banks of the rivers Vecht, Spaarne, and Oude Rijn, prosperous villages and country estates lined up in the 18th century and still do today. In this setting of beautiful houses, garden pavilions, covered walks, village churches, mills, and bridges, daily life is depicted so attractively that the laborious work of fishermen, boatmen, and labourers appears to our eyes more like an idyllic pastime than harsh reality. Verrijk’s drawings contain an enormous amount of detail, and he captures all the particulars even in small towns and villages.
