WINTER IN ROTTERDAM
“De Rivier de Maze Voor de Stadt Rotterdam in het begin van het Jaar 1784” [The river Meuse before the city of Rotterdam at the beginning of the year 1784], engraving “drawn and engraved in copper by A. v.d. Haar and J. v.d. Spruit“, Coloured by a lter hand. Size: 30.5 x 51 cm.
We see Rotterdam: the Ooster Oude Hoofdpoort [old main eastern gate] and the rear side of the houses along the Haringvliet; at the end of this area, the wharf of the Admiralty of Rotterdam at the Boerengat port and the windmills on the Bosland street and along the Oostzeedijk are visible.
When the ice was strong enough, distinguished citizens also made their appearance. Sleighs, carriages, and play wagons glided and rolled over the thick ice crust to the sound of jingling bells from steaming horses. But the ice was for everyone. In this lively scene, rich and poor, young and old, come together before the city. There is food and drink at a “koek en zopie” stand. We see iceboats and numerous sleds. Merchants offer their goods in small stalls. At the entrance of the Oude Haven [old harbour], a ship lies frozen in place, waiting for spring. That will take a while.
