Idyllic Dutch winter – Petrus Josephus Lutgers, 1837-1844

Published between 1837 and 1844 as part of “Gezigten in de omstreken van Haarlem” [Views in the Surroundings of Haarlem].  Coloured by a later hand. Size (including text): 19 x 23.5 cm.

The Manpadsbrug, a connection between the Herenweg and the inner dunes, is located on the Leidsevaart between Haarlem and Leiden. On the left is the tavern ‘de Capel.’ This establishment served as a stopover for travelers using the towboat. In winter, there people were skating on the ice of the Leidsevaart.
