Dancing women – Gustav Süs, 19e-eeuw
€850
Two dancing women, washed ink drawing by Gustav Konrad Süs. Signed “G. Süs f.[ecit]“. Size (paper): 14.7 x 11.5 cm.
German painter, illustrator and writer Gustav Süs (1823-1881) specialised in depicting scenes of everyday life and animals.
With the decline of religious and historical painting in the 19th century, artists increasingly found their subject matter in the life around them. Gustav Süs here aptly captured a joyous moment of two dancing maids. The emotion and spontaneity of the scene fits into the Romanticism of the time. Even the somewhat stiff lady just entering, seems to start smiling.
