On the Steps of the Capitol (The Garland Seller) – Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1876
€650
ON THE STEPS OF THE CAPITOL (THE GARLAND SELLER)
Etching by Paul Rajon after the painting (Opus CXXXII) by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, executed in 1876. Signed in pencil by both Alma-Tadema and Rajon. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 11 × 22 cm.
With this flower seller, Alma-Tadema presents a scene from everyday life in ancient Rome. Rather than depicting an important historical event, he created an archaeologically reconstructed genre scene populated by anonymous figures. The people in many of Alma-Tadema’s works often appear distinctly English in type, with fair complexions and reddish hair, frequently combined with Victorian hairstyles.
In this composition, the architecture has been stripped of most decorative detail. A broad expanse of plain marble dominates the scene, concentrating attention on the seated garland seller and giving the composition its characteristic sense of stillness and spaciousness.
Price: Euro 650,- (incl. frame)
