“Art et Décoration. Revue mensuelle d’art moderne.” Colour lithograph designed in 1898 by Gustave Lorain and printed by Lemercier in Paris. Size (paper): 63,5 x 43 cm (frame: 101 x 70,5 cm).
Art et Décoration is a French magazine founded in 1897 and originally devoted to the decorative arts and new trends like art nouveau and art deco. The “monthly review of modern art” was founded by Émile Lévy, publisher and owner of Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts on 13 rue Lafayette in Paris.
There were a number of promotional posters produced, which could be ordered or won by readers. This poster by Gustave Lorain (1882-1965) is in typical art nouveau style, inspired by the natural forms and the sinuous curves of plants and flowers, with asymmetry and whiplash lines.
Art et Décoration is still a popular interior decoration magazine today. In October 2014, the 500th issue was published, with French elegance as a theme.
