18th CENTURY AMUSED COMPANY IN FRONT OF AN INN
Drawing with pen and watercoulor by Jacob Perkois (1756-1804). Signed on the wall in the middle of the scene “Perkois f[ecit] 1790“. Size (paper): 31.5 x 25 cm.
In front of the inn “In de Posthoorn” at the edge of the forest, a hunter stands telling a story, with two hares lying on the ground that he has just shot. Opposite him is a young lady with a basket full of fruit, smiling as she listens to his tale.
Another visitor of the inn listens in and also smiles. A little boy watching doesn’t quite know what to make of it. The hunter’s dog looks at us and seems to take the story with a pinch of salt.
This so-called genre painting captures a spontaneous moment from everyday life, while the natural surroundings of the forest and the windmill in the background create an idyllic atmosphere.
