Dutch interwar tourism poster – Arnold van Roessel, 1930

Dutch tourism poster, colour lithograph designed and printed by Arnold van Roessel, 1930. Size: 106 × 75.5 cm.

During the interwar period, the Dutch Railways and the ANVV (Algemeene Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Vreemdelingenverkeer, the national tourist board) made extensive use of posters to attract foreign visitors to the Netherlands. This example presents a luxuriant display of spring flowers—tulips, irises, daffodils, hyacinths, anemones, crocuses—set against a backdrop of characteristically Dutch bulb fields, with a church, drawbridge, and sailing vessel.

Arnold van Roessel (1883–1947) operated his own printing house (Steendrukkerij Van Roessel & Co., Amsterdam) and specialised in graphically powerful, clearly stylised designs. Proof impressions (épreuves sans lettre) such as this example were made to approve colour and composition before the addition of text—destinations, dates, or slogans—in a subsequent printing stage.
