The reality of winter here is idealized. Outside, it was bitterly cold, and many people had no work during the winter months. In drawing however, the people seem unaffected and enjoy the skating. The feeling of nostalgic longing is characteristic of Dutch Romanticism and manifested itself in typical Dutch landscapes, river and town views.
The Zeeland painter Cornelis Kimmel (1804-1877) was the son of a baker on the Wal in Middelburg. He received his education at the Middelburg drawing academy and then with Pieter van Hanselaere in Ghent. Around 1830, he settled back in his hometown as a drawing teacher and portrait painter. In addition, he also painted scenes from peasant life, which in their faithful realism provide a nice picture of the Walcheren countryside of his time. Kimmel specialized in summer and winter landscapes and winter scenes with skaters, a beloved genre, also in the first half of the 19th century.
